If that number surprised you — or if you honestly couldn't name half the things on that list — you're not alone. Most households accumulate connected devices the same way they accumulate junk in the garage: slowly, invisibly, and without any real plan. And just like that garage, it eventually starts causing problems.
The good news? A quick WiFi audit can dramatically improve both your network's performance and your home's security. The better news? It doesn't require a computer science degree.
Why Forgotten Devices Are a Bigger Deal Than You Think
Every device connected to your WiFi is doing something, even when it looks idle. Background syncs, app updates, telemetry pings, cloud check-ins — these aren't massive bandwidth hogs on their own, but stack up ten or fifteen forgotten devices and you've got a slow leak that can genuinely drag down your whole network.
Beyond performance, there's the security angle. An old Android tablet that hasn't received a security patch since 2021 is essentially an unlocked window on your home network. Same goes for smart gadgets you replaced but never fully decommissioned. Attackers don't need much of an opening.
And then there's the social situation nobody likes to talk about: guests. Family visits, holiday gatherings, your kid's friends hanging around after school — all of those people joined your WiFi at some point. Some of them are still on it.
Step One: Pull Up Your Router's Connected Device List
The most direct way to see what's lurking on your network is through your router's admin interface. Here's how to get there:
- If you use a mesh system (Eero, Google Nest, Orbi, etc.), open the manufacturer's app on your phone. Most of these have a dedicated "Connected Devices" section right on the home screen.
- If you have a traditional router, type your router's IP address into a browser. It's usually
192.168.1.1or192.168.0.1. You'll log in with your admin credentials — if you've never changed these, check the sticker on the back of the router. - If your ISP provided your router (common with Xfinity, AT&T, Spectrum setups), log into your ISP's app or web portal. They typically show connected devices there.
Once you're in, look for a section labeled "Connected Devices," "Client List," "Device Manager," or something similar. What you'll see is a list of every device currently — or recently — connected to your network, usually showing a device name, IP address, and MAC address.
Step Two: Play the Identification Game
This is where it gets interesting. Some devices will show up with obvious names like "Sarah's iPhone" or "Living Room TV." Others will show up as cryptic strings of letters and numbers, or generic manufacturer names like "Amazon-XXXX" or "Espressif_Device."
Here's how to decode the mystery entries:
Look up the MAC address prefix. The first six characters of any MAC address identify the manufacturer. You can paste that prefix into a free MAC lookup tool online (search "MAC address lookup") and it'll tell you who made the hardware. That helps narrow down whether you're looking at a phone, a smart plug, a TV, or something else entirely.
Check your known devices list. Walk through your home mentally — or physically — and account for every connected thing: phones, laptops, tablets, smart TVs, streaming sticks, game consoles, smart speakers, thermostats, security cameras, smart bulbs, robot vacuums, and anything else. Cross-reference that mental list with what's showing up in the router.
Ask yourself the timeline question. Did you have people visiting around the holidays? Did a contractor come through and ask for the WiFi password? Did your teenager have friends over last weekend? Those could all be live connections you'd forgotten about.
Step Three: Deal With What You Find
Once you've identified the devices, you've got a few options depending on what you're looking at.
Devices you recognize but no longer use — that old Kindle, the tablet from three phones ago, the smart plug you replaced — should be removed from your network. The cleanest way is to "forget" the network on the device itself if you still have access to it. If not, you can block the device by MAC address in your router settings, or just change your WiFi password (more on that in a second).
Guest devices that overstayed their welcome — if your router supports a separate guest network (and most modern ones do), this is exactly what it's for. Going forward, put visitors on the guest network so they automatically stay separated from your main devices. If you haven't set one up yet, this audit is a great reason to do it today.
Devices you genuinely can't identify — these warrant more caution. If a device shows up that you cannot account for after thorough investigation, treat it as a potential security issue. Block it by MAC address and change your WiFi password. It's probably just a neighbor's device that accidentally connected years ago, but it's not worth assuming.
The Nuclear Option: Change Your WiFi Password
If your device list is a total mess and you'd rather start fresh than untangle it piece by piece, changing your WiFi password is the most efficient reset button you have. Every device gets kicked off instantly. Then you reconnect only the devices you actually want on your network, one by one.
Yes, it's a bit of a hassle to re-enter credentials on your TV, your smart speakers, and your thermostat. But doing it once gives you a completely clean slate — and you'll probably be surprised how much faster your network feels afterward.
While you're at it, make the new password something actually strong. A random string of letters, numbers, and symbols beats "OurHouse2019!" by a wide margin.
Make This a Regular Thing
A one-time audit is great, but the goal is to build a habit. A lot of smart home households do well with a quick quarterly check — just a few minutes to scroll through the device list and make sure nothing unexpected has crept in. After major household events (a move, a big gathering, a new roommate), it's worth doing an extra pass.
Some mesh systems and routers will actually send you alerts when new devices join your network, which is a solid feature to enable if yours supports it. It won't catch everything, but it gives you a heads-up in real time rather than letting unknown devices quietly accumulate.
