You Packed the Boxes — But Did You Pack Your Smart Home? A Relocation Survival Guide
Every year, roughly 27 million Americans pack up and move to a new home. Most of them spend weeks obsessing over furniture layouts, paint colors, and whether the new kitchen has enough counter space. Almost none of them spend any serious time thinking about what happens to their smart home.
That's a problem. Because your smart home isn't just a collection of gadgets — it's a finely tuned ecosystem of devices, automations, network credentials, and location-specific settings that took months (maybe years) to build. And when you move, all of that has to come with you. Except it doesn't automatically.
Here's the thing nobody tells you at the closing table: moving your connected home is its own project, completely separate from the physical move. If you don't treat it that way, you'll spend your first two weeks in a new house manually re-pairing 40 devices, wondering why your morning routine no longer fires, and cursing at a smart lock that refuses to talk to its hub.

Start Way Before Moving Day
The worst time to figure out your smart home migration strategy is when the movers are already loading the truck. Ideally, you're thinking about this four to six weeks out.
Start by taking a full inventory of every connected device you own. Yes, every single one — including the random smart plug in the garage you forgot about and the water leak sensor under the bathroom sink. Write it down. Note which hub or app controls each device, what automations it's part of, and whether it uses WiFi, Zigbee, Z-Wave, Bluetooth, or Thread. That last part matters more than most people realize, because different protocols have different re-pairing headaches.
While you're at it, screenshot or export every automation routine you've built. Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, SmartThings — most of these platforms let you view your routines in detail. Some let you export them. Either way, you want a written record before anything gets disrupted, because cloud-based automations tied to device IDs can behave unpredictably when those devices get reset and re-added.
Research the New Home's Network Reality Before You Arrive
Your current house has dead zones you've already solved — maybe with a mesh node in the hallway or a WiFi extender in the basement. Your new house has its own dead zones, and you don't know where they are yet.
If possible, visit the new home before move-in day with your phone and run a quick signal check in each room. Apps like WiFi Analyzer (Android) or Network Analyzer (iOS) can show you signal strength as you walk around. Pay special attention to the garage, basement, backyard, and any room far from where the router will likely live. These are the spots where your outdoor cameras, smart garage door opener, and basement sensors are going to struggle.
Also find out where the ISP's entry point is and where you'll be placing your router or gateway. That single decision shapes coverage for the entire house. If you're moving into a larger home than your current one — which is common — plan upfront that your existing single router probably won't cut it. This is the moment to think seriously about upgrading to a mesh system rather than fighting coverage problems device by device after you've already moved in.
The Network Name Question: Keep It or Change It?
Here's one of the most debated smart home migration tactics: should you give your new network the exact same SSID and password as your old one?
For a lot of people, yes — this is the path of least resistance. If your new router broadcasts the same network name and password your devices already know, many of them will reconnect automatically without any re-pairing at all. It's genuinely the fastest way to get a large fleet of WiFi devices back online.
The catch? Not all devices handle this gracefully. Some will still need a manual reset. And if you're switching ISPs or router brands, there may be setup steps that force a fresh configuration anyway. It's worth trying, but go in knowing it won't be a perfect solution for every device.
If you do change your network name, budget serious time for re-pairing. Devices that use a manufacturer app for initial setup (smart bulbs, plugs, thermostats) usually need to be factory reset and added fresh. Hub-based devices on Zigbee or Z-Wave are a bit more forgiving — they stay paired to the hub, not the WiFi — but the hub itself still needs internet access to function fully.
Re-Pairing Devices: The Order Actually Matters
When you're setting devices back up in the new house, don't just grab whatever's closest. Work in layers.
Start with your core infrastructure: router, mesh nodes, and any smart home hub (SmartThings, Hubitat, Home Assistant, etc.). Get those fully online and stable before touching anything else. Then move to the devices that other things depend on — your main smart speaker, your bridge for Philips Hue, your security system panel. After that, work outward to individual devices.
For smart locks and security cameras especially, don't rush. These are your safety-critical devices. Make sure they're fully functional and tested before you consider the setup complete.
Also pay attention to placement in the new home. A smart thermostat that worked perfectly in your old house might be in a WiFi dead zone in the new one. A motion sensor that triggered your hallway lights might need repositioning entirely because the hallway layout is different. Give yourself permission to experiment — your first placement isn't necessarily your final placement.
Recovering Lost Automations
This is where people get the most frustrated, and honestly, it's where smart home platforms still have the most room to improve.
If you use a cloud-based platform like Google Home or Amazon Alexa, your routines are theoretically saved to your account. But when devices get removed and re-added, they often get new device IDs, and your old routines may reference the old IDs. You might have to manually reassign devices within each routine — or in some cases, rebuild them from scratch.
This is exactly why that written record from your pre-move audit is so valuable. Having a list of what each automation was supposed to do means you're rebuilding from a blueprint, not from memory at 11 PM after a long moving day.
For Home Assistant users, the good news is that your configuration files can be backed up and restored, which makes migration significantly cleaner — one solid argument for a more local-first setup if you have a lot of automations you really care about.
Give Yourself a Two-Week Grace Period
Here's some honest advice: don't expect your smart home to be fully functional on day one of living in a new place. Or even day five. Set a mental deadline of two weeks for getting everything back to where it was, and treat anything that works before then as a bonus.
Your new home is a new environment. Signals behave differently. Layouts are different. You'll discover a device you forgot to pack, or realize a sensor needs to be in a completely different spot than it was before. That's all normal.
The households that handle smart home moves best are the ones that planned ahead, kept their documentation, and didn't try to rush the rebuild. The ones that struggle are the ones who assumed it would just sort itself out.
Spoiler: it won't. But with a little prep, it absolutely can.
