Every few years, a new WiFi standard shows up, and the marketing machine kicks into overdrive. WiFi 7 — officially known as 802.11be — is the latest, and the numbers being thrown around are genuinely staggering. We're talking theoretical speeds up to 46 Gbps, latency improvements that make WiFi 6 look sluggish, and a feature called Multi-Link Operation (MLO) that lets devices connect across multiple frequency bands simultaneously.
And yet, here's the question nobody in the press release seems to want to answer: Should you actually go out and buy a WiFi 7 router right now?

What WiFi 7 Actually Brings to the Table
Before we talk timing, it's worth understanding what's genuinely new here — because a couple of things actually matter.
Multi-Link Operation (MLO) is the headline feature, and it's legitimately interesting. Previous WiFi standards made devices pick one band to connect to — 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, or 6 GHz — and stick with it. 4K QAM (Quadrature Amplitude Modulation, for the curious) allows more data to be encoded per signal transmission. In plain English: faster speeds at the same distance, assuming conditions are good.
In controlled testing environments, WiFi 7 is genuinely faster than WiFi 6E. In the real world, inside an actual American house with walls and microwaves and neighbors' networks bleeding in? The gap narrows considerably.
The Catch Nobody Wants to Talk About
Here's the thing about WiFi 7: your router can only be as good as the devices connecting to it. And right now, the number of consumer devices with WiFi 7 radios built in is... small.

The MLO feature alone can help in congested environments. Just know you're paying an early adopter premium — routers are still running $300 to $600+ for quality options.
Households currently on WiFi 5 or older (upgrade, but maybe not to WiFi 7): If your router is four or more years old and you're still on WiFi 5 (802.11ac), you have the most to gain from an upgrade — but you don't necessarily need WiFi 7 to get it. A solid WiFi 6 router in the $150–$250 range will be a dramatic improvement over what you have, and you can save the WiFi 7 jump for two or three years from now when it makes more sense.
WiFi 6E households (hold off): If you upgraded to WiFi 6E in the last year or two, you're in great shape. The 6 GHz band you're already using is the same band WiFi 7 is building on. You're not leaving a ton on the table, and waiting another two to three years for WiFi 7 prices to drop and client devices to catch up is the smart move.
Renters and smaller households (definitely wait): If you're in an apartment or a smaller home with 10 or fewer devices and you're mostly streaming, video calling, and browsing, WiFi 6 or 6E is more than enough. WiFi 7 isn't going to make Netflix load faster. You'd be spending real money for effectively zero perceptible benefit.
A Realistic Timeline for When WiFi 7 Becomes Essential

2029 and beyond: WiFi 7 is table stakes, similar to how WiFi 5 is viewed today. If you haven't upgraded by now, you're the one holding everyone back at Thanksgiving.
What You Should Actually Do Today
